Pastels Aren’t Just for Macaroons and Cupcakes: Tips for Decorating with Pastels
If you thought pastels were reserved for the girliest-of-girl’s spaces or dainty desserts, think again! Soft hues can be refreshingly modern, or they can be strategically used to put a contemporary spin on an otherwise traditional space.
With pastels making a huge comeback this year, we thought we would give you a slew of ideas for decorating with pastels and incorporating this color palette into your home. They really take the cake in our book!
Pair with White. Pairing pastels with white furnishings and upholstery can be a powerful choice. Use pastel accents like pillows and throws to complete the look and tie it all together.
Accent Walls. Try painting a single wall a pastel shade to add a subtle color variation to a room. Pair with natural woods, earth tones, and varying shades of grey, and you have a winning combination as well as a truly serene living space.
Mix with Metallics. Pastels can be used to create a soft glow, and add a touch of romance, warmth and softness especially when paired with gold or brass in a bedroom. We love the way blogger and master stylist, Stephanie Sterjovski from the blog SS Life + Style has accomplished the look in her master bedroom…and yes, it’s definitely all girl!
Artwork. Artwork is a great source for color inspo! When “peppered” throughout a fabulous gallery wall, pastels add a bit of whimsy and make things seem not so serious. Which we LOVE!
Combine with Unexpected Bright Colors. Yes they can play together… and we are loving it! One of today’s biggest design trends involves playing up pastel shades with doses of bright hues. Note how radiant doses of bright pink are just the punctuation mark to the pastels in the room.
Why is the combination of pastels alongside bright, bold colors so alluring? The answer: Pastels can really hold their own, even when paired with bright colors that command center stage attention!
Subtle and Sophisticated. Another approach to pastel interior design is to keep it subtle. Add in some touches of black or a wrought iron canopy bed like the one above. The result: an undeniably sophisticated room that celebrates a pastel shade without going overboard or looking childish or juvenile.
Not ready to commit? Try just a few small pieces like these fantastic pastel coffee cups. We’re sure you will warm up to them in a hurry!
Would you dare to decorate with pastels in your home? Perhaps you already have!
