Our Favorite Bookcases & Tips for Styling Them
Styling a bookcase may just be one of our favorite aspects when putting the finishing touches on a design. Here are some of our favorite bookcases we have come across and some things to consider when styling them.
Small / Accent Bookcase Roundup
Small or accent bookcases work great in kids’ rooms, playrooms, reading nooks, or anywhere you are looking to add a little bit of storage to a space that doesn’t have the room for a larger bookcase.
Because accent bookcases are on the smaller side, you will want to visually break up the shelves with some decorative items so that your eye has some room to move around visually. Also, if you need your bookcase to house a lot of books, try breaking up the repetition by stacking books both vertically and horizontally.
Tall / Narrow Bookcase Roundup
In spaces such as living rooms and dining rooms where you tend to have a bit more room and may need more storage, or you just have the extra space to display some fabulous accessories, tall and narrow bookcases are the way to go.
When styling tall and narrow bookshelves, placing some large-scale items amongst the books will help you fill in the space without it feeling too heavy or cluttered, like we did for the client below. You will also want to steer clear of any items that are tinket-sized as it can start to look unorganized and busy. If you do have smaller items that you would like to display, try keeping them in a collection so that they visually don’t get lost.
Wide Bookcase Roundup
Wide bookcases work great in entry areas, behind furniture, if you want to display a large piece of art or a TV above them, or if you have a large wall to fill up.
The rules for styling a wide bookcase are similar to that of a vertical one. You will want to keep most of your books standing vertically so that you don’t have too much horizontal action going on. If you are placing your bookcase in an entry area, place a large circular mirror or an over scale piece of art above it for a functional and beautiful place to house your books.
So, there you have it, our all-time favorite bookcases, happy styling!
