Coffee Table Styling: How to Style Your Coffee Table
Coffee table styling …how do you make your coffee table both stylish and livable? Just a few accents can define and personalize your coffee table, otherwise known as the heart of the living room.
Start by mentally dividing your rectangular coffee table into halves or quarters. In each part, center a design element within. Make each element different, but keep them similar in height. Consider making one of the elements a small tray itself with three small elements within.
Trays
Trays are great because they corral everything in one place. Break up the horizontal plane by adding something vertical like a vessel or a vase. Choose something that has a pretty shape over something simple and straight. Apply styling rules within the tray to keep it from looking cluttered- group things together in threes, vary the height of the objects in the tray, place the tray on a half or quarter of the coffee table.
Books
When it comes to coffee table books I like to use books that I have actual interest in. Why? Well, someday you might want to actually pick one up and read it or at least flip through the pretty pictures. Personally, the books on my coffee table have to do with one of three things- horses, dogs, or design. Books are a great way to infuse a bit of your personality and can serve as a great conversation piece for guests. Click here for a list of our favorite interior design books!

Decorative Objects
I prefer an odd number- either three smaller pieces grouped together or one large accessory. Although I like to keep everything low overall, it’s important to vary the heights of the objects that you use.
A Bowl or Box, or Both!
Bowls and boxes work really well for added storage and provide the perfect spot to hide remotes.
Lastly, leave a little free space because you might want a place to set your coffee on your coffee table.

I just inherited a butler’s tray table. I don’t need another coffee table.
How else or where else can I use it?
Sarah Dooley, Associate ASID says
Hi Julie, you can absolutely use it as a side table or a makeshift bar cart!
