Organize Your Home: Cut the Clutter at Home and Get Organized for the New Year
Most New Year’s resolutions are focused on self-improvement and kicking bad habits. Why not add your home to the list of resolutions this year?We are here to help you organize your home.
Resolve to clear the Clutter-clearing the clutter is one of the best and least expensive ways to feel better about your home.
Each year most of us acquire mounds and mounds of stuff. Without some routine purging, our closets, cabinets, and drawers become a volcano on the verge of eruption and it becomes hard to know what you have and enjoy the most. This year resolve to go room by room periodically clearing anything you don’t use and totally LOVE and donate it to a charitable organization. Many of them will even pick it up for free!
As designers, we find that the more cluttered our homes are the more cluttered our minds feel. There’s so much truth to that. Surround yourself with the things that make you feel good and say see-ya to things that are dingy and dated.
Think about how you use your home and the different activities that take place in each room and then create activity zones for each, with appropriate storage for the things you use most. Things get chaotic when activities take place in areas that you weren’t expecting them to, like the kids brushing their teeth in the downstairs powder room. Create an organizational plan to fit into your family’s daily habits. Having a plan makes it much easier for everyone to clean up and put things away.
Stash the not so beautiful items like shoes, hats and scarves in attractive woven baskets or bins and remotes in a decorative box on your coffee table.
Clear your countertops of everything you don’t use on a daily basis and stash the mail, cell phones, and iPads in an organizational charging station.
If your home is on the smaller side, it can be even trickier to keep things decluttered and organized. Here are a few ideas to create some much-needed extra storage. In a small space, find furniture pieces that are multi-functional and that have hidden storage. Take advantage of small nooks and any wasted space by installing shelving or cabinets. Go with drawers instead cabinets with doors and shelves. They make it easier to access the things you need and are easier to keep organized.
With these few tips, we guarantee you will be breathing a little easier in your home in 2015.
