Tips & Tricks For The Perfect Pillow Combinations

Let’s talk pillows. There are three things to consider when it comes to styling your sofa or your bed with pillows: sizes, arrangements, and patterns. It’s important to know sizing so you know how each element is going to look as a whole. Once you get the sizing down, there are many different ways you can arrange your pillows, mainly based on your own personal style and comfort! And lastly, we are here to tell you that mixing and matching patterns is a good thing and will instantly liven up your space! If you scroll on down, you can learn all our tips and tricks on selecting pillow sizes, how to arrange them, and which patterns and textures to play with.

Standard Pillow Sizes

In our pillow size chart, you will see various standard pillow sizes that can better guide you into choosing which ones are the perfect size for your space. Some people make the mistake of buying the wrong size, in which case will make your piece of furniture seem disproportional. To achieve that cohesiveness between your pillows and your headboard or sofa, we have rounded up some of our favorite pillow combinations below!

How To Arrange Pillows On A Sofa

Posh Peonies

Minimal

The minimal approach of arranging only 1 or 2 pillows can be used if you are working with a smaller sofa, like a loveseat, or if the pillow or pillows are bold enough to stand on their own against the sofa. The minimalist may also just want that extra sofa space to lay down and relax without the interruption of a pillow avalanche!

Classic

You can never go wrong with a classic combination, and easily the most common pillow arrangement: 2 small square decorative or lumbar pillows in front of 2 larger square decorative pillows. This arrangement is symmetrical and fills out the sofa with just the right amount of fluff!

Asymmetrical

Asymmetrical balance is when one side is not identical to the other. Therefore, in this arrangement, one side of the sofa has more pillows than the other side, giving the space a casual and cool feel.

More Is More

For those people who live by the motto, “More is more.”, then this over the top pillow arrangement is the one for you. This is also the perfect opportunity to mix and match a multitude of pillow patterns and textures!

How To Arrange Pillows On A Bed

King

There are many ways in which you can arrange pillows on a king bed because there is so much space to work with. In this instance, there are 3 euros, 3 decorative square pillows, 1 small decorative square pillow, and 1 lumbar pillow.

Queen/Full

For a queen or full bed, it is standard to use 2 euros, 2 decorative square pillows, and 1 lumbar. Also take into account the headboard! If you are working with a small headboard or one with details that you do not want to hide, then arrange your bed with shorter pillows like lumbar pillows.

Twin

Twin beds are much smaller in width, therefore only one column of pillows is needed. In this case, arranging 1 euro and 1 decorative square pillow is key. You can also consider incorporating the sleeping pillows into the design in order to play around with different heights!

Mixing And Matching Patterns

Mixing And Matching

Once you’ve chosen pillow sizes and arrangements, it’s time to play with pattern, colors, and textures! Don’t be afraid to mix and match all of these elements. Mix bold solids with black and white modern patterns to achieve a glam look. For a more cohesive monochrome color scheme, match blues using damask patterns and striped patterns. Shake things up with a leather pillow and pair it with a botanical pattern and a vintage indigo for a natural eclectic theme. Go pretty and preppy by mixing navy and blush tones together. Buffalo check and floral patterned pillows are my favorite combination!

So, there you have it. I hope these tips and tricks have inspired you to toss your old pillows and throw in some new ones!
